Intermediate Photography

For photographers who know the exposure triangle and want full control. We work in manual on the streets of Brisbane's CBD, rain or shine, with street photography exercises along the way, and fix the habits that hold your photos back.

Curriculum

What we cover in 4 hours

The curriculum is a general guide to what we cover. Timings shift a little with the group, the light and the location.

  1. 0:00 to 0:30

    Manual mode, properly

A quick recap, then setting up custom buttons so changing settings becomes second nature.

  2. 0:30 to 1:15

    Metering and the histogram

Metering modes, reading the histogram, exposure compensation and protecting highlights.

  3. 1:15 to 2:00

    Autofocus for moving subjects

Continuous focus and tracking on people, bikes and anything else that moves. Street exercise: zone focus and catch passers-by without raising the camera to your eye.

  4. 2:00 to 2:45

    Creative control

Depth of field for separation, then motion: panning, freezing action and slow shutter. Street exercise: pan a cyclist, then blur a crowd around one still figure.

  5. 2:45 to 3:30

    Light and composition

Backlight, contrast and shadow, layering a scene, and going beyond the rule of thirds. Street exercise: find a pool of light in the city and wait for someone to walk into it.

  6. 3:30 to 4:00

    Review and editing workflow

Feedback on your best frames and a simple editing workflow to finish them.
